The Real Super Hero
“There is none like unto the God of Jeshurun, who rideth upon the heaven in thy help, and in His excellency on the sky.” Deuteronomy 33:26
I remember the old comic book character Superman who was also the heroic character of television and movies. “It’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s Superman!” was the cry of the folks on planet earth. That’s how they described that red and blue blur as he flew across the city of Metropolis after making a daring rescue or halting a runaway locomotive that was about to cause a major catastrophe. We all know that Superman is a fictional character, dreamed up in the imagination of his creator to apparently fulfill the idea of a supernatural hero who could leap tall buildings in a single bound, but more importantly bring justice to a world of crime and evil.
The original television series was in the 1950’s when I was in elementary school. Back then, it was the opinion of the large majority of folks that evil was bad, and law and order was good. Folks went to movies and cheered the heroes and booed the villains. In other words, people had a sense of justice, that evildoers would be punished, and law-abiding victims would not fear that perpetrators would not pay their dues to society. Of course, not every single criminal was caught and tried, but there was an effort on the part of law enforcement personnel, attorneys, prosecutors, and judges to see that evil was punished and righteousness reigned, at least as far as was in their power.
Fast forward to today. We still have those in all areas of law enforcement who are trying to keep evil at bay, but roadblocks are being put before them every day. Rather than having superheroes, we are being overrun with authorities who are either girly-men or even manly girls, people who care more about “political correctness” (which is the opposite of eternal correctness) than they do about the people they supposedly serve. The line between good and evil has been so blurred that we, the people, have very little confidence in those who are responsible for keeping us safe and secure in a nation that has gone the “way of Cain” (Jude 11), God-haters, corrupt, greedy, covetous, and rebels against God and man. What is so astonishing is that these self-centered and ungodly leaders keep getting elected, which is only further proof of our nation’s descent into depravity. I know that this sounds rather harsh, but I don’t know any other way to describe what I have seen over the last few years. It certainly hasn’t been rainbows and lollipops. The comic book heroes are even being redefined in the image of those whom the Bible condemns. No wonder that there is confusion among the younger generation. If the trend in godlessness is not stopped, we can’t even imagine what the world will be like in 50 years, assuming that Jesus hasn’t returned by then.
There are some of us who still desire to see righteousness flourish across the entire globe, and the good news is that we will eventually see evil banished and righteous reign. We have a Super Hero who is not a figment of someone’s imagination, but a real, live, sovereign, and omnipotent God who can ride upon the clouds, send lightning bolts across the sky, raise the dead, and save a soul from the devil’s hell. He is none other than the God of Jeshurun, which is a surname meaning “upright” that was given to the nation of Israel. So, while it is nice to be entertained by a superhero who wears a cape and flies across the sky, it is so much better to know the One who owns the sky.
