He Loves Me Like A Rock
“It is God that girdeth me with strength, and maketh my way perfect. He maketh my feet like hinds’ feet, and setteth me upon my high places.” Psalm 18:32-33
King David wrote several of the Psalms in scripture including the one referenced above. We may think that we have troubles, but David had more than, as the old colloquial saying goes, “he could shake a stick at”. I don’t know from where that saying came, but I have heard it most of my life. A lot of good it does to shake a stick at a problem unless it is an angry, ferocious dog, and depending on the size of the dog, one might need a pretty big stick. Perhaps the saying came from what President Theodore Roosevelt said about walking softly but carrying a big stick!
We have all heard the account of David’s adultery with Bathsheba and his involvement in her husband’s death. Those problems he brought on himself. When he was younger, he served King Saul who eventually became his father-in-law, but who also became very jealous of all the attention that David was receiving from the people of Israel. His envy led Saul to pursue David in an attempt to kill him, but God had other plans for David and thus protected him. David’s son, Absalom, tried to kill him also. Most of the Psalms that David wrote were pleas for help from the LORD in fighting against his enemies, and then he would usually end up his Psalm in praise of the LORD for His goodness and mercy.
In verses 30 through 50 of Psalm 18, David praised God as a shield against Satan and his influence upon God’s children. God is the only One able to keep us from the devil’s clutches. There is none other to which we can turn. The LORD is God. He gives us strength and clears the path for us so that we don’t stumble and fall. He gives us grace and swiftness like a deer so that we can escape to a high and lofty place above our enemies.
God gives us the strength and the weapons to fight spiritual warfare. He gives us victory after victory over our enemies. God cares about His children and turns a deaf ear to those who would harm us. He gives us preference over our enemies and causes them to submit to His children. None of this is possible in our own strength. We thank You, O God, for all Your mighty wonders that You have done to help us. Thank You for Your love and mercy.
We all can’t survive without God and without His help for our daily living. David understood that. Even though he sinned (who doesn’t?) and made some really bad choices in his life, he knew that God was always ready to help him when he humbled himself, threw his pride aside, and repented of his sins. I am sure that if David could live his life over again, he likely would have made better decisions. However, he and all of us can’t get a “do over”. Even if we could, we would still make some bad choices, likely different ones than we made originally, but still ones not meeting God’s standard. Thank God we have a God who loves us like a rock, a solid and everlasting love, and is ready and willing to forgive us and cleanse us of our sins. I heard a lady on television one time who said that her two main prayers were, “Help me, help me, help me,” and “thank You, thank You, thank You.” That pretty much sums it up.
