The Cure for Heart Trouble
“Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in Me. In My Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you, And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto Myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.” John 14:1-3
Jesus had told the disciples that He was going away, and they would not be able to go with Him. Peter, the disciple who was always outspoken, wanted to know why he couldn’t follow Jesus to His new location. Peter even said that he would die for Jesus. Jesus questioned his determination. Since Jesus knew Peter well, He warned him that he would deny Him three times before the morning dawned.
Hearing these predictions, the disciples couldn’t help but be troubled. They had become so accustomed to constant fellowship with Jesus that they naturally wanted that to continue. They didn’t want to give up their best Friend. Like many of the Jews, they were still expecting Him to set up His earthly kingdom and rid Jerusalem of the Romans. To calm their uneasiness and confusion, Jesus urged them to believe in Him. It wasn’t that they were to just believe He was the Son of God, but to believe that He was on a mission to bring salvation to all who would trust Him and that He always had their best interest at heart. There was a lot that He told them that they didn’t understand until after His crucifixion and resurrection, but the only way for them to survive spiritually and be successful when it came time for them to carry on His mission was to trust Him fully even though they didn’t understand everything, the same admonition that Jesus gives to all who believe in Him.
Jesus told His disciples about His Father’s house which contained places for all of them to dwell in for all eternity, and Jesus’ task was to get this house ready for the new occupants. It was a task that He took on Himself so that everything would be perfect. After all, Jesus was a carpenter in His early years. It is quite humbling to think about the Lord of lords and King of kings making sure that our heavenly home is just perfect for us. It makes me think about how we clean our houses when we know that company is coming, but then say when they arrive, “Excuse the mess.” Jesus will never say that. What He prepares is beautiful and perfect for His brothers and sisters.
Since Jesus is going to a lot of work to make things great for all those who believe in Him, He will certainly come again for His family. Knowing that is a sure cure for “heart trouble”.
