Help Us to Remember
“Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.” Ephesians 5:20
In 1989, I wrote a poem entitled “Help Us to Remember”. It goes like this:
Lord, sometimes we grow so weary, And burdened down with care; Sometimes we neglect to thank You, For all our sins You bear.
If we would only pause, For just a moment or two; And remember all the trials, That You have brought us through.
Even though we seem so busy, Throughout our daily grind; Why does it seem so difficult, For some quiet time to find?
Even though we have been negligent, And undeserving of Your love; You always find time for us, And send us blessings from above.
Thank You Jesus for Your love, And the suffering that You bore; Please help us to remember, To give You thanks forever more.
Life is tough for most people, at least everyone that I know. I don’t think that I know anyone who hasn’t had some sort of challenge in their lives. I looked up the word “challenge” in Webster’s Dictionary: “a call to take part in a fight, contest, etc.” We’ve all heard the saying, “he is in a fight for his life”, but it doesn’t necessarily mean literal fisticuffs or an endeavor to remain physically alive, just as “keeping one’s head above water” doesn’t literally mean an effort to keep from physically drowning. These phrases can refer to daily challenges of earning a living, rearing children, keeping ahead in the rat race, or any number of other tasks, problems, trials, or worries that we all face.
However, how would we ever grow and mature into faithful men and women of God without some challenges along the way? I will admit, though, that sometimes we tend to get overwhelmed with all the things we have to do and all the obligations that we must meet. The Apostle Paul, in Galatians 6:9, urged believers not to be weary in well doing. Sometimes it’s not the doing, but the weariness that becomes a challenge. We tend to burn out when it seems that our challenges are endless. The sure cure for burn out and weariness is to stop and remember how good that God has been to us. He hasn’t left us without help. We just have to remember to thank Him for His help, thank Him for life and the abilities that He has given us to meet the tasks and obstacles that we face each and every day. Thank You Lord for Your blessings on me.
