The Predicters of Doom
“While the earth remaineth, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease.” Genesis 8:22
There is a prediction being proclaimed by certain politicians and pundits that in 12 years the “fat lady is going to sing”, and earth as we know it will be gone due to climate change. This would almost be laughable except that too many people, particularly the younger folks, are buying into it. Youngsters and young adults are very impressionable and vulnerable to ideas generated by those who are attempting to earn their support. Fear is an excellent motivator.
I remember when I was a child back in the 1950’s. We were told that Russia could strike at an time, dropping an atomic bomb and destroying America. We actually had to practice safety measures by going out into the hallways of the school, kneeling down on our knees by the wall, and covering our heads with our hands (as if that would protect us from a direct strike or the radiation that would follow.) On some occasions, some of the student’s mothers would come and drive us a few miles away from the city. As children, we believed that destruction was imminent, at least on the days we participated in these exercises. (I was more concerned about lunch and recess.) People with the funds to do so built bomb shelters. Hollywood made movies about nuclear destruction showing how dire the situation would be without food, water, shelter, and so on.
But here it is, 2019, some 60 odd years later, and we’re still here. Russia did not attack and no atomic bombs were dropped on the “little red brick schoolhouses”. The thing is, though, this old world, as we know it, will come to an end one day, but it won’t be because of global warming, global cooling, or climate change. It will be when God says so and not a minute sooner. It might be 12 years, 100 years, or it might be closer than we think. The way the world is going, it may likely be sooner rather than later when Jesus returns to reward the righteous and judge the sinners.
Speaking of sinners, the climate change promoters attribute this climate change to man’s pollution and his use of the natural resources that God provided for man, that is, oil, coal, etc., and the intelligence to harness resources to keep our homes warm in the winter, provide transportation to our jobs, and put food on the table. There is nothing wrong about not being wasteful, and it is certainly a good idea to be responsible to care for our environment. However, I doubt that these politicians have ever considered that it is the pollution due to man’s sinful wickedness and his indifference to and rejection of the Lord God of creation that just might be bringing judgment upon America through violent storms, extreme heat and cold, and other weather phenomena. Man cannot control the weather. God asked Job in Job 38:4, “Where were you when I created the world? Tell Me if you think you know so much” (paraphrased). I actually feel sorry for these folks because they have made climate change a religion, an empty god without hope.
Compared to the vast knowledge of the One who is the originator and author of all creation, I know very little. One thing that I do know is that God is in control, and everything will work out for the believer just as God promised. So hang in there and keep your eyes on the eastern sky.
