A New Beginning
“In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. And the earth was without form and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters. And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.” Genesis 1:1-3
Do you all remember when we were all worried about Y2K? That was 19 years ago! We all thought that the world was going to come to a halt, that nothing would work, and we would all be sitting in the dark. We even gathered up food and water just in case. And then nothing happened. The world went on as usual, we had lights and water, and it was all a lot of hype that didn’t come to pass. It was certainly a non-event, nothing like when God created the earth.
Since this is the beginning of a new year, I thought it apropos to refresh our memories about the Creation. Some people have trouble believing that God spoke the world into existence, but if one believes that God is omnipotent, omniscient, and sovereign, then it is easy to believe that He made the world and man in six days. That’s what faith is all about. It is a real comfort to me to know that my God is that powerful and awesome, yet He cares about each one of us on an individual basis right down to our smallest concerns.
On the first day when God began to create earth, everything was black and dark, and He created light resulting in a cycle of day and night. However, He didn’t make the sun, moon, and stars until the fourth day (Genesis 1:14-19). So, how was there light on the first day without the sun? Good question. I can’t explain it other than to say that God produces His own light. In Revelation 21:23, we are told that the heavenly new Jerusalem will have no need of the sun or the moon to light it because the glory of God will light it, and the Lamb, Jesus, is the light thereof. The sun, moon, and stars were created to provide warmth and a way to organize time and seasons. God is the Creator of order–everything in its proper time and place.
My prayer is that you all will have a happy and healthy new year, but more than that, that you will endeavor to have a closer walk with the Lord and to make the study of God’s Word a daily priority in your life.
