Sweets for the Sweet
How sweet are Thy words unto my taste! yea, sweeter than honey to my mouth!” Psalm 119:103
God’s word is indeed sweet. Sure some of it is hard and penetrating to the soul that is sick with sin, but sometimes medicine to make one well does taste bad until healing comes, and then it becomes sweet. Most people like food that tastes sweet: candy, ice cream, cake, and pie However, the “food police” keeps telling us that these sugary treats are bad for us. It’s for sure that we shouldn’t make sugar the main stay of our diets, but, in my opinion, if we are eating healthy, balanced, and nutritious meals, a sweet treat now and then is ok. I mean what good is it to just eat seaweed, kale, and tofu? God meant for us to enjoy our food, and He provided such an array of tasty meats, vegetables, and fruits for us to enjoy, and I think that includes sweets, eaten in moderate portions, of course. The so-called experts tell us one week that a particular food is good for us, and the next week they say it will kill us. You never know what to believe. I say just use your better judgment.
There is one sweet treat that is very good for us, so good, in fact, that our future depends on it. God’s word gives us hope, peace, and direction for our lives. The Bible is the only book that is filled with truth from front to back. No other book can tell you more about yourself than God’s word. To spend time studying and feasting on “Thus saith the Lord” is like sitting down to a gourmet meal prepared especially for you. As you taste each morsel of truth, the flavor, and richness of each word fills your heart and your mind with a joy and contentment that is not known to the unbelieving world.
One saying of which, as far as I know, originated with me is: “If we plan on spending eternity with the Lord, wouldn’t it be the wise thing to get to know Him while we are still here on earth?” There’s no better way to know the Lord than to spend time in the only book that He ever wrote, His autobiography. The Bible was not meant to sit on a shelf and collect dust. It was meant to be read, reread, studied, and ingested. Unlike physical food that the “experts” warn us about, God’s word will not kill us. On the contrary, it will enrich our lives. Yes, God’s word is sweet.
