God Is An Awesome God
“For My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways My ways, saith the LORD.” Isaiah 55:8
Several years ago a songwriter named Rich Mullins wrote a song of which the chorus goes like this: “Our God is an awesome God; He reigns from heaven above; With wisdom, power, and love; Our God is an awesome God.” Webster’s Dictionary defines the word “awe” as “a mixed feeling of reverence, fear, and wonder caused by something majestic, sublime, superior, grand, etc.” The sovereign God of the universe, the triune God as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, is the only One who can rightfully and completely claim title to these adjectives.
Our society has been so dumbed-down and spiritually numbed that many give more respect and honor to the Kardashians or a football team than they give to the Creator, the LORD of heaven and earth. When we are tempted to use words like “awesome” to describe a haircut, an outfit, a car, etc., how can these items compare to the majesty and glory of Creator God? Another term which is misused to describe ordinary things is “amazing”, which Webster’s defines as “to fill with great surprise or sudden wonder; astonish”. Most of us know the song “Amazing Grace”, and , indeed, grace is amazing. How could God be so good to us to give us blessings that we don’t deserve? That should cause us to be astonished at the grace of God, His love, and His mercy.
If words like “awesome”, “amazing”, and “holy” are used to describe the mundane, What words are left to describe our God and His glorious name?
