Who Can We Trust?
“Thus saith the LORD; cursed be the man that trusteth in man, and maketh flesh his arm and whose heart departeth from the LORD” Jeremiah 17:5
The prophet Jeremiah was warning the people of Israel to not place their trust, that is, their security, freedom, and hope in mortal man instead of the LORD God. They were known to abandon God from time to time and look to the idols of the godless nations around them, but would always find that doing so was a bad decision. Have you ever trusted in someone and then had that person to betray your trust? It doesn’t even have to be anything significant or drastic. It can be as simple as someone telling you that they will come and help you with a project and then not show up with no phone call or apology. Or it could be a serious need that you request of a friend, but he or she just can’t seem to find the time to come to your aid.
Too many occasions like that makes one doubt the true intent and integrity of those he or she thought were good friends. How about the one to whom you confide something personal, and then he or she turns your confidence into gossip. Then there are those who borrow a tool, camera, or some other item, return it in bad condition, and then claim that the item was like that when they borrowed it. Perhaps they don’t even return the borrowed item at all. One of the more serious violations of trust is when a spouse cheats on his or her spouse.
At times a trust is broken unintentionally through no fault of a person. Unforeseen events can cause one to not be able to fulfill his or her promise to another. And then sometimes those to whom we count on pass away, and we are left with loneliness and sometimes despair because that one on whom we leaned is gone. They didn’t leave us on purpose. It just came their time to go. The main point is that man is not the ultimate One in whom to place our trust. The Lord is completely trustworthy with anything and everything that we entrust to Him, from our lives and eternal destination to simple, everyday decisions. He always has our best interest at heart and will never let us down. We can tell him our innermost thoughts, and He will never betray us. In the final analysis, the Lord is the only constant in our lives. He is always with us and will never leave us. On that you can depend.
