Ignorance is Not Bliss
“O LORD, how great are thy works! and Thy thoughts are very deep. A brutish man knoweth not; neither doth a fool understand this.” Psalm 92:5-6
The following words describe the feelings of the Psalmist who wrote to exhort people to praise the LORD. It was written primarily for the Sabbath day, but like all scripture, it is good for any day of the week.
There is no one to be thankful to more than the LORD God. Thank Him in the morning for His loving kindness of which He will shower those that love Him. Thank Him every night for His faithfulness that He has surrounded us with all day. Any instrument we can play should be played to praise Him whether a banjo, guitar, violin, piano, or any other instrument. God has every right to be praised for all He has done for His people. His thoughts toward us are so deep, so deep in fact that the world cannot comprehend them.
The world doesn’t have the foggiest notion of the depth of God’s love. The wicked may prosper for a time but their day is coming when they will cease to exist in this life. God will always be here and always be high and lifted up. No so for evildoers. LORD, You have given special blessing to Your anointed. You’ve given Your people opportunity to be vindicated from the attacks of the wicked. Those who trust in You will flourish. Even the older people will still live fruitful lives. This will prove Your righteousness and Your enduring faithfulness.
The Psalmist certainly understood the depths of God’s love and the need to praise Him for His many blessings. However, while we certainly appreciate the many blessings of God, it is imperative that we praise Him for who He is, the sovereign, righteous, and holy God of all creation. People say that “ignorance is bliss” indicating that what one doesn’t know is to his or her benefit. We know that is not true, particularly when it comes to eternity. Folks can ignore God, but He does not ignore them. All people are held accountable to our loving, but just Father. I might be ignorant about a lot of things, but I do not want to be ignorant about God, Christ, God’s word, or what He requires of men and women. It is not that hard to figure out. The prophet Micah wrote that “(G0d) hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the LORD require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God.”
People can stay ignorant about God and His word if they desire, but they will live to regret it for all eternity.
