The Value of A Life
“Are not two sparrows sold for a farthing? and one of them shall not fall on the ground without your Father. But the very hairs of your head are numbered. Fear ye not therefore, ye are of more value than many sparrows.” Matthew 10:29-31
In this verse, Jesus was speaking to His disciples and desired for them and for all believers to know just how much God loves us and cares for us. He used two illustrations from the physical world to do so. In the first example, Jesus compared God’s love for us to the love He has for a tiny sparrow. Wrens, sparrows, and other small birds come to our birdfeeders, we watch them briefly as they enjoy their meal, but then we go about our business and forget all about them. There are millions of birds, and we don’t know one from another. They have no real value to us other than the enjoyment we receive from watching them or from the beautiful songs they sing early in the morning.
In Jesus’ day, sparrows did have a monetary value, but a very small value–two for about a penny. That seems rather insignificant to us, yet, not one sparrow can fall to the ground without the LORD’s notice. The birds are important to God, but His concern and care for them pale in comparison to His love and care for people. God didn’t send His Son to die on the cross for sparrows.
The second illustration centers around the hair on our heads. They are not just counted, but each strand of hair has its own number. I never thought about it like that until I heard someone on Christian radio make that remark. I don’t know how many hairs the human head contains, some more than others, but imagine the detail about a person that God records in His biography of each one of us. This shows the great interest that God has in even the most intimate details of each person’s life. Nothing happens to us that He is not keenly aware of our physical and mental well being. Sometimes God seems far away, but know that He is with us all the time.
Today I saw an article on line, the headline of which stated that a worker with the organization whose primary objective is the killing of unborn babies, celebrated her or his work by decorating a CHRISTmas tree, of all things, putting a pair of forceps on the top where usually an angel or a star goes. I just saw the headline. I did not read the article because I was too disgusted and sickened at my stomach. Every little unborn baby that is aborted is known by God. I can’t understand how anyone can participate in such a cruel and horrible event as the taking of the precious life of a little tiny baby. This on line article may not be true since there is so much false information posted, but I suspect that it is true considering other disgusting and ungodly things that has been verified of the workings of this organization. Not only do I not understand their lack of compassion, I also don’t understand how one political party can base abortion as one of their top agenda items. Do they not know that since God notices when a sparrow falls out of a tree, that He also more than notices when the body of an innocent baby is torn apart by ungodly and greedy humans?
Unless the people of this nation fall on their knees and repent of the sins that have so deeply permeated our country, I don’t see much hope for the future of America. We always reap what we sow.
